Muyil ruins are located 22 kilometers south of Tulum along highway 307, in the direction of Carrillo Puerto,.. This site is particularly attractive due to its location within Sian Ka'an Ecological Reserve.
In addition to the Maya constructions, the site has an interesting thematic path and a bird observation station that help understand the vegetation and wildlife surrounding the area.
Muyil is an interesting, but not frequently visited, site which began to be inhabited in the late preclassic (300 b.c. to 250 a.c.) by Maya who based their economy on the exploitation of the natural surroundings that include jungle, lakes and ocean.
These ancient Maya established a basic exchange system taking advantage of their geographical position and means of communication with inhabitants in the North area of Belize, via Boca Paila, Chunyanche and Muyil lagoons and the Caribbean Sea.
During the classic period of the Maya culture (250-800/1000 a.c.) due to a demographic increase a new relationship with other groups in the peninsula was developed. In the late postclassic period, under the ruling of Chichen Itza and after the domain of Mayapan, Muyil was a part of the important coastal commercial network that gained relevance in the peninsula.
